Samsung Electronics Co. on Tuesday launched its new top-of-the-line Galaxy 3 smart phone in Europe, in a new challenge to Apple Inc.'s iPhone in the market there, Reuters reports. The new model is going on sale in 28 European and Middle Eastern countries as Samsung works to increase its lead over Apple. The phone, which runs on Google Inc.'s Android operating system and has a 4.8-inch screen, is one of the largest smart phones ever. It's been labeled as "iPhone-Killer" by many tech-geeks because it is more smarter and faster than the iPhone 4s. The phone, which goes on sale in weeks, is likely to cost £499 without a SIM — the same starting price as an iPhone 4. Analysts predict the launch will spark a smartphone price war — which would be good news for consumers.
The Galaxy S3 is able to recognise and follow a user’s eyes — so it will not switch off the screen when being looked at. And a Samsung spokesman said of the phone’s voice-recognition capabilities: “It is more like a good friend and listens intently and responds effectively to you.” The Galaxy uses the latest version of Google’s Android software — dubbed Ice Cream Sandwich. Samsung is already the world’s biggest mobile phone manufacturer after overtaking Nokia.
