Philippines Being in Top Spammer List
The Philippines has been identified as one of the top spam-sending nations to the United States and Europe, accounting for 2.8 percent of total spam sent to the two countries, a report by security software firm Kaspersky Lab indicated recently. The US remains the top source of spam for the two global regions at 39.2 percent, followed by China in a distant 9.1 percent, and Brazil at 6.6 percent. Other top nations sending spam to US and Europe include India (3.7 percent); Korea and Russia (2.9 percent); Japan (2.5 percent); Great Britain (2.3 percent); and Taiwan and Indonesia (1.5 percent). Spam refers to unsolicited email messages peddling products and services, or malware disguised as a legit electronic mail. While overall spam levels dipped by 1.9 percentage points in June compared to May, Kaspersky Lab noted that this could be just a “seasonal summer fluctuation” in spam messages observed during the third quarter of the year. In Europe, email users got a boatload of spam messages pertaining to the European Football Championship 2012, the biggest sporting event in the region that lasted the whole month of June. The Philippines likewise contributed to spam messages sent to Europe users, although at a much smaller rate of 0.8 percent of total spam messages. “We would like to draw your attention to the fact that during the summer holidays spammers tend to focus on children and students and the services they use – social networking sites and online stores,” warned Maria Namestnikova, senior spam analyst at Kaspersky Lab. “At the very least, parents need to make sure their children have enough knowledge about IT security so they don’t pass on credit card data to cybercriminals while shopping online,” she added. While spam emails are generally not harmful when left untouched, some unsolicited email messages have also become carriers of malware, which could cause real damage to users’ computer systems. Kaspersky said malicious files are found in 3 percent of all emails sent worldwide, a slight increase of 0.2 percentage points in June from May. “Trojan-Spy.HTML.Fraud.gen led the most number of malware attached to email accounting for more than 10% of all detections,” the company said. “It is followed by Packed.Win32.Katusha.o. In addition, mail worms still dominate malwares in terms of detection, which is not surprising considering their uncontrolled mechanism of self-distribution.” “Once these malicious programs are installed on a computer, they start downloading other malware from the Internet,” it added.
[sub]source[/sub] No doubt. :xixi:
