well, it depends on the people.
it work well with my big brother though, he is married now with his girl.
they have been in an LDR for like.. 3 years?
It depends on how the couple work their relationship. If both couple are willing to last it for a long time, then it will. If one gave up, it's game over.

LDR do not all fail...what fails are the individuals trying to have the LDR. You must have total trust in one another and willing to work through all obstacles
