K-12 Education System

K-12 Education System: is this something which could really enhance the quality of education in a country or not?
The term K-12 represents ‘kindergarten through twelfth grade’. K-12 is a designation for the sum of primary and secondary education. In the U.S., K-12 is used as a short form for the publicly-supported school grades prior to college i.e., school grades prior to college are kindergarten (K) and the 1st through the 12th grade (1-12). The term K-12 comprises of the first and last grades of free education in the U.S. http://definitions.uslegal.com/k/k-12-student/
(I don't know if this is the right place for this topic. You can move it to somewhere else if this doesn't fit here :) )

Re: K-12 Education System

I think it can really enhance the quality of education but there are still disadvantages to us and especially to our parents.

Re: K-12 Education System

It can enhance education but there are more disadvantages than advantages. One disadvantage, one more year in school means more expenses for our parents and the common reason of the youth not finishing school is the lack of budget. Another is the lack of jobs, they are saying that it would be easier for us if K12 will be applied because after high school you can already get a job but the problem is there are no jobs and if ever there is, there would be a very small chance of a high school applying being hired because there are also college graduates applying. You can't say that high school graduates are the only ones can apply in this articular job because there are really a lot of college graduates unemployed and it would be really unfair. And also, the school facilities. A lot of school don't have complete facilities and lacking of rooms. Imagine a 70:1 ratio in most of the schools here. There are more things to be straighten out before K12 can really be used.

I think it's great because there are people who cannot afford to go to college. College is very expensive.

Re: K-12 Education System

^ Kindergarten to Twelfth grade in America (for public schools) is free. And when I say public schools, it's not like the Philippines. It looks something like this http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=USA+public+schools&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&biw=1252&bih=545&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=uymcT6XOIabg0QHe2KiKDw#um=1&hl=en&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=usa+classroom&oq=USA+classr&aq=0&aqi=g1&aql=&gs_nf=1&gs_l=img.3.0.0.10165.11837.4.12954.10.10.0.1.1.1.466.2963.0j1j1j6j1.9.0.wsljgVqwzTs&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&fp=4162ec74cf8a9f12&biw=1252&bih=545 Sometimes it's even better than Philippines' private schools. Anyway, I don't thing having a K12 system is a bad idea. Although it might take a long time. People in America graduate when they're around 18-19 and they'll be surprised if you graduate around 15-17 Personal experience, since they added have two more years than the Philippines, the subjects weren't that hard. (Or maybe I just didn't take calculus.) So, it depends. In my point of view though, the Philippines' education system is good as it is.

Re: K-12 Education System

K-12 is a good idea if and only if the subjects and lessons taught wouldn't be redundant. Just imagine talking about nouns during tenth grade. :(

Re: K-12 Education System

I used to hate it because I'm a competitive kid and I'd like to get ahead all the time. But after three years of being in the program, I don't think it's a bad idea. I went to a very academic-based, public, high school in the Philippines and it's quite competitive, too. College-level classes were required. One thing I hated the most was the schedule, school was from 7am to 5pm. Like holy crap hahahaha I was 12 at the time and I needed my sleep. ): I know most schools in the Philippines are not like the school that I entered to, but... I know Filipinos want to get ahead and get it all done, but the thing is, you're actually exasperating yourself. You can be so unsure in choosing a major at 15 years old. You don't want to regret, you don't want to keep changing majors and most certainly you don't want to waste your little momma's money. But for the people who never switched majors and actually loved their course, kudos! K-12 does take a while, but at least you're not in a time crunch. And yeah you are right, the Philippine government does not fund the schools, which really stinks. But I understand that. In the US, going to a public school is free, and I'm more than glad it is; I seize every opportunity I come across to. But one cannot do that in the Philippines. You're just lucky if you get into a public school that actually has high quality education.

Re: K-12 Education System

I think the current education system of PH is already okay. The problem is actually our government. They don't value education that much when in fact we all must invest in learning. "Education is a right not a privilege."

Re: K-12 Education System

Well, 1st, it's not a good idea to be applied in the Philippines. Take a look at our government, what they're doing and how they do things. Look at us, how they touched our lives. Philippines is progressing but we didn't feel it. There may be a lot of reasons why but we just don't judge our government because it's really not that easy to divide equally the wealth that they're gaining from this progress and also due to the population we have. We must also see how education was implemented here. What are lacking. How many rooms we need for those children in the public schools. How many teachers we need for them but we cannot hire due to lack of budget. How many chairs and tables we need for their convenience in learning? 2nd, if K-12 will be implemented here, we'll have those graduates who aren't globally competitive. How can you think those students who aren't a master of something can compete to those people who really have a focus and well educated of those stuffs? Though we cannot say that they are not educated enough of their field but those times aren't enough to learn those things. The kind of education we have now is okay. Look how many unemployed nurses we have. They are unemployed not because they don't have enough knowledge of something but because there are already a lot of them hired around the globe.

Re: K-12 Education System

Having K-12 implemented in the Philippines is actually not a bad idea. If you'll read DepEd's discussion paper on this matter, they've relayed a lot of good points on why K-12 should be implemented. However, you have to consider a few things: lack of facilities, trained and capable teachers, families' capability of sending their child/ren to school and the poor financial status of the country. So I think K-12 is possible but not feasible today.

Re: K-12 Education System

Adding years in a curriculum is not the answer of having good education here in PH. The answer is the right allocation of budget but there is a problem, and that is corruption.
So I think K-12 is possible but not feasible today.
Exactly. It is not feasible. Come to think of it. Others find it hard to finish their studies because of financial problem. They tend to stop to go to school. And now, DEPED is trying to add years in schooling? C'mon! This will lead them to a big no. of drop outs and out of school youth.

Re: K-12 Education System
K-12 Education System: is this something which could really enhance the quality of education in a country or not?
It would definitely enhanced the quality of education in the Philippines, no doubt about that. In my opinion, this law is no different from the others, our government give us new ideals to keep up with the other nations, but without funding. It could backfire, we are stepping ahead blindly.... It's good to implement K-12 systems in the Philippines, more nations would see our education more reliable, and more importantly mas maraming kabataan ang magiging pag-asa ng bayan but, the last time I check, we don't even have sufficient teachers, sufficient rooms, sufficient technology and sufficient schools to educate K-10 students, so how can we leap to teach from K-12? A lot of Filipino students already dropped out of High School because of tuition fees, they instead preferred to search for jobs because finishing high school was costly or too long. The plan is genuine but hopeless.

Re: K-12 Education System

I don't think it would really help the quality of education here in the Philippines. What I think they should do is improve the way of teaching, since as we may all encountered, a lot of teachers are well, not really suited to teach. :)

Re: K-12 Education System

It's alright, the k-12 thing. It will improve the literacy rate of us. But then, how can they push through with this K12 if we lack teachers and classrooms. It's not that good yet. And also, this K12 destroyed me and my common batchmates in attaining the 'G' badge we're getting this S.Y 12-13. It has changed to '10'. -_______-"

Re: K-12 Education System

What we currently need (really really need) are better classrooms, sufficient books, and well-trained teachers to sustain the kind of education every child needs. Given the current situation that we are in, we are not yet ready to embrace this new kind of system especially when our educational system itself still lacks a lot of things for it to be considered a good system of education. It is also an extra burden for the parents :no2:
